Binance's Dilemma: Why It Hasn't Applied for a BitLicense in New York

Binance, the world's fastest-growing cryptocurrency exchange, has been making waves in the digital currency market with its rapid growth and innovative features. In other words, any cryptocurrency exchange looking to operate in New York must obtain a BitLicense from the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS).

Obtaining a BitLicense is no easy feat. The application alone costs $5,000, and even if approved, there's no guarantee that it will be issued. To date, only six firms have been granted virtual currency charters or licenses by the DFS, while others have seen their applications denied.

Coinbase and Ripple, two of the largest exchanges in the market, were among the first to obtain a BitLicense back in May 2016. Yet, despite being one of the most popular exchanges globally, Binance has never even applied for a license.

The question remains: why hasn't Binance applied for a BitLicense? Is it due to concerns over the hefty application fee or the potential risks involved with the regulatory process?

Regulation appears to be on the horizon in the world of cryptocurrency. Online exchanges in China and South Korea have recently been shut down as government regulators rush to ban or at least minimize illegal coin mining.
